Hello, My name is Berk. As a contractor, I have learned a few things about keeping up a home. But I can tell you, when I started out in my field, I was hardly what any seasoned professional would call handy. Through desire and perseverance along with a good deal of help and guidance from supporters and mentors – to whom I am forever grateful, I was able to become a professional contractor and earn my living as such.
In the early years, there were countless times where I was left to my own designs; when I was caught in a pickle, not knowing what to do. I had to become inventive and take a few chances. I would call those situations challenging to the point of scary at times. But, also they were immensely fulfilling in their outcomes; the times when you just have trust yourself and go for it. It’s in these moments you become that much better at what you do.
It’s Easy When You Know How
When I was a kid, I once heard a great man, Ron Popeil, an admired American inventor, say “It’s easy when you know how”. His remark, while simple, took root in my soul. This said to me that it was okay to take a shot at any desired goal who’s outcome (not matter how it turned out) might well be worthwhile; whose success would be beneficial to you and the folks you care about, and whose positive effects would linger for years. It’s this kind of insight that opened so many doors to real craftsmanship and innovation. You can cut a board to size with a power tool, you can etch glass like a professional, etc. You can install your own window… in your own house!
It truly is easy, when you know how.
Most learning, outside of the formal, is had through doing (and reading the directions, of course). I personally, have found that with perseverance and a belief that “what one man can do, another can do” – The Edge (1997), that the only limits you will encounter will be the ones you allow. It’s up to you (Just so you know up front, brain surgery will not be attempted here. There could be some minor rocket science though… no promises).
This site is dedicated to offering you the inspiration to learn new some new household skills; to expand yourself in ways that will benefit you and your homelife as well.
lastly, I want you to know that the coveted distinction of being “handy around the house” is merely a matter of determination, time and a belief in yourself. There will be a few spills and splinters along the way. That’s all part of the process. But, in the end, you, as the “household maintenance authority”, will be knocking out those “To-Do” lists in half the time and with twice the pride.
Let’s get started…
